Welcome

Welcome to the Friends of Topsail Beach blog.  Click on the categories to the right to find out about current and past Topsail Beach issues and to get involved.

Topsail Beach Rotary Park is perhaps the finest public space in our community and it is greatly appreciated throughout our town and beyond.  However, many of us are increasingly concerned about the problems at the park.  We have begun to document these issues on this site under “What’s the Problem?”

While the park is a shared project between the Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast and the Town of Conception Bay South, the club and town council do not have a continuous presence in the park.  We need a neighbourhood effort to look out for the park and voice concerns about it to the council in a more unified way.  We welcome you to join us.  Please help us spread the word.

  1. What you are doing is a fine thing. Any help I can give please call on me.
    Cheers, David Murphy

  2. I am a member of the Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast. The clean-up of the park was one of the first projects the club undertook and it was in my year as club president (1992-93) that the development of the park as it is today began. With the considerable help of Penecon Construction the work took the better part of 10 years to complete. The Provincial Government, Local Councils, and public and private donations totalling over $500,000 made the development one of the best tourist attractions in the CBS area
It is sad to see that this public ammenity is being slowly degraded by a few thoughtless individuals. From the chopping down of trees, the damage to benches, walkways and fences for fuel to the many fires to the destruction of some of the childrens’ playground equipment the enjoyment of the park is gradually being eroded.
I hope that the Friends of Topsail Beach can save the park for the future. More money is not the answer Public education and respect must be the long term goal but in the interim, suveilance and security may be the only option.
I hope something can be done.

  4. I have lived in Topsail all my life in the summers and for the last 2o years all year. I am disturbed that now the beach has been restored, that people wish to destroy it.
What can I do to help? Please let me know!

  5. I used to stroll regularly along the coast at Topsail Beach, but for the past year I haven’t enjoyed it as much because of the increasing number of fire pits surrounded by broken glass and nails. It is such a beautiful place. And it is a FABULOUS idea and plan you have to help protect, nuture and save it! I will help in anyway I can, just let me know what to do! I am definitely a friend of Topsail Beach.

  6. Topsail Beach as a young man was my classroom for “beach enjoyment”. It was where I would hitch hike to on warm sunny days of summer. It was always a bee hive of people of all ages enjoying this wonderful seaside resort.

What a gift to us all.

I cannot recall seeing much neglect then as we are experiencing now,
I do recall however the garbage strewn about the parking lot/car ash tray dumping/fast food containers/bottles/cans etc.

Most of this was disposed of under cover of night and week days when the activities were quieter. Times have not changed, the damage to park beaches and other areas of the park are unfortunately more serious; not only to Topsail Beach, but Middle Cove Beach and many others are falling to the same damages.

Education will change attitudes, they must change.

Ocean Net launched its very first beach clean up on Topsail beach in 1997 and have continued to clean up this beautiful coastline. Education by action is our mandra.

The Rotary, must be commended fo their vision and hard work and now the Friends Of The Beachs must become “The Stewards” to sustain this beautiful park like natural wonder.
Good luck, like you, Ocean Net will continue to enjoy and protect Topsail Beach.
